AI search tracking monitors how visible your product or brand is across AI-powered search platforms. As more users turn to AI assistants for recommendations and information, presence in these platforms becomes a critical channel for discovery and adoption.

What is AI Search Tracking?

AI search tracking answers the question: When users ask AI assistants about your category, do they mention you, cite your content, and recommend your product? DevTune monitors:
  • Whether your brand is mentioned in AI-generated responses
  • How often your citation sources (tracked domains) appear in results
  • Your share of voice compared to competitor brands
  • The sentiment of how AI platforms discuss your product
  • Which platforms and prompts deliver the strongest presence

Why Search Tracking Matters

The AI Search Shift

User search behavior is shifting rapidly:
  • Users ask ChatGPT instead of traditional search engines
  • Perplexity provides AI-powered search results with inline citations
  • Google integrates AI Mode directly into search results
  • Gemini and Grok answer product and technical questions conversationally
If your brand is not visible in AI search responses, you are missing an increasingly important discovery channel.

Beyond Traditional SEO

AI search works differently from traditional search engines:
  • AI models synthesize information rather than simply listing links
  • Citations may or may not appear depending on the platform and query
  • Ranking is not linear like a traditional search results page
  • Brand mentions in the response body carry significant weight
  • Content quality and authority affect whether AI models recommend you

Primary KPIs

DevTune tracks three primary key performance indicators for your AI search presence.

Overall Presence Rate

The percentage of prompts where your brand or citation sources appeared in AI responses. This is your top-level indicator of whether AI platforms know about you and surface your content.

Share of Voice

Your brand’s share of total mentions and citations across all tracked prompts, relative to competitor brands. This measures your competitive standing in AI search results.

Sentiment Score

How positively or negatively AI platforms discuss your product when they mention it. Sentiment analysis evaluates the tone of AI responses that reference your brand.

Secondary Metrics

Beyond the primary KPIs, DevTune provides six secondary metrics for deeper analysis:
  • Docs Presence - How often your documentation domains appear in responses
  • Blog Presence - How often your blog content is cited
  • Brand Mentions - Rate at which AI responses mention your brand name
  • Top of Answer - Whether your brand appears in the first position or opening of AI responses
  • Avg Citation Rank - Your average position among cited sources
  • Primary Citation Share - The proportion of citations pointing to your domains versus competitor domains

What You Can Track

Prompts

Prompts are the search queries submitted to AI platforms. They are the primary unit of tracking in DevTune:
  • “Best API testing tools for microservices”
  • “How to implement rate limiting in Node.js”
  • “Compare authentication libraries for React”

Citation Sources

Citation sources are the tracked domains you monitor for appearances in AI responses:
  • Your documentation site
  • Your marketing website
  • Your blog
  • Your GitHub repository
  • Competitor domains

Brand Terms

Brand terms are the name variations monitored for brand mentions in AI responses:
  • Your product name and variations
  • Competitor brand names
  • Common misspellings or abbreviations

Brands

Brands organize your tracking into your primary brand and competitor brands. Each brand has its own set of citation sources and brand terms.
